Free Speech

How far does free speech go? When radio shock jock Don Imus, described the Rutgers women's basketball team, on the April 4 Imus in the Morning, as "nappy-headed hos," he packed so many layers of offense into the statement that it was like a perfect little diamond of insult. There was a racial element, a gender element and even a class element (the joke implied that the Scarlet Knights were thuggish and ghetto compared with the Tennessee Lady Vols).

Imus was a famous, rich, old white man picking on a bunch of young, mostly black college women. So it seemed pretty cut-and-dried that his bosses at CBS Radio would suspend his show—half frat party, half political salon for the Beltway elite—for two weeks, and that MSNBC would cancel the TV simulcast. And that Imus would plan to meet with the students he offended. Case closed, justice served, lesson—possibly—learned. Move on.

So where do we draw the line?

Where do "we" draw the line?

Marti...who is "we" and what line?

You see...in order to have meaningful discussions, words and phrases must be defined.

Otherwise, it's just a passing bromide.........meaningless for extracting any powerful conversations from folks who otherwise would love to engage in decent "back and forth" conversations the way it was back in the dark ages("when the dinosaurs died" ..to use your phrase) when I was a Midwestern Farm kid.

Ah, but one raised with the tough educational standards (and the butt whoopins that came with any slight infraction.)

So if "we" means the law abiding people of the US, and we adhere to the Constitution, this dude has the right to say what he is willing to accept the social or legal penalties for so doing.

"We" can refuse to associate with the likes of those whom we simply don't like, and it's no one's business to seek to change that right.

In my day, a dad or boyfriend or husband would simply say: "You called my (daughter, etc) a "Ho", and knock the schmuck half way to next week.

When I was brought up, my dad taught me from my earliest age that it was the duty of a real man to respect and protect all women, and not just our family, but ANY woman . "Without this protection which only came from Christianity's blossoming, there can be no true civilization, for women have equality before GOD and actually have an easier row to hoe at the Pearly Gates, for a man has greater responsibilities and must accept a harsher judgement as a result of failure to prevent his wife or sister or ? from some action that is not condoned"

Paraphrased, but close.

Thus it was that I set out in life and never failed to do exactly those things, even when I was a combat veteran and spent time in Asia, having vowed to be a "Nice Clean guy" for a lady that I would meet someday.

So no matter how many whores sought to entice, I treated them as though they were ladies and often they would cry because that had never been seen in their lives.

And yes, no man uttered dirty words in front of a lady then either. My Dad knocked at least two dudes on their butts for that infraction. Both guys later apologized.

A different world.

Central California huh?

Yeah, those winters some years back darned near drove my wife batty, and me as well. Day after day of foggy dreary. The last 8 years have been totally different, but we were spoiled from being Mountain Folk Placervillians for a long time until those slime who steal from the taxpayers by accepting a salary for screwing up the economy, destroyed the interest rate market and ruined tens of thousands of Real Estate and building businesses, including our hard work and sweat for twelve years.

Political?

You have just met the guy who knows that subject backwards and forwards. There will never again be a possible solution to the evil in Washington through the ballot box. That "fix" has been in for many years. It's all a giant sham and hoax and "show" for the masses of people who wouldn't know a Bill of Rights from a Hershey Bar.

Best to you.

Bob, the Irish guy
